Explore Magnificent Photographs: 20 Handpicked Online Galleries

An attractive variety of old and antique cameras

According to Stephen King, reading and writing a lot are essential to being a great writer. The same may be said about photography. You must take your own pictures and study many excellent ones if you want to get better at photography. But where are these amazing pictures?

Although Instagram may seem like the place to go, it's not the best location to get high-quality photographs.

Great photographs may be found in a lot of locations. A few examples of these resources include the personal websites of well-known photographers, photo books published by professional photography galleries, photography magazines sold at newsstands, art galleries and museums located throughout our cities, and online galleries and magazines.

I've included a list of twenty websites that I personally use to see photos in this article. Sincerely, I erased all other internet resources from my PC after finishing this list. 'Less is more' is my motto. Instead of an unending list of websites that I will never have time to explore, I would rather have a concise, manageable list that I can turn to from time to time.

In the end, depending on my personal preferences, I have rated these resources from good to exceptional. The overall quality of the images, how well they suit my own taste, and the variety and quantity of images on each website are the three criteria I've used to assess these sites.

I hope this list is beneficial for you too.

20

British Journal of Photography

One of the oldest and most reputable websites for photography is the last recommendation on my list. With more than a century of existence, it serves as a thorough resource for both amateur and professional photographers as well as students. Expert essays, interviews with well-known photographers, online exhibits, and a collection of excellent photos are all provided by this website to the photography community.

The inaugural edition of the 'British Journal of Photography' was released in 1854. 'British Journal of Photography' became the world's oldest and most prominent photography journal when well-known people like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and George Bernard Shaw joined its contributors. This journal amalgamated with 1854.photography, a renowned digital media platform, after a century and a half.

On the website of this magazine, select the 'Journal' section and then the 'Projects' button to see the photographs. A compilation of all the photographic projects on the website may be found here. These projects all deal with documentary photography, even if their subjects are very different.

You might need to buy the relevant issue from the online store or subscribe to the website in order to view the whole collection of images for a particular project. But even simply looking through the projects is a fantastic way to get ideas.

This magazine offers a wealth of intriguing photography ideas in addition to beautiful photos.

This site offers a wealth of varied, knowledgeable articles and interesting interviews in addition to examining a variety of photography projects. It's similar to having access to an established, reputable magazine that will keep you amused.

Click on the 'initiatives' option in the website's navigation to quickly locate initiatives that align with your interests. Projects can be filtered by certain topics or subjects, including Art & Activism, Documentary, Fine Art, Mixed Media, and Portraiture. There are a ton of different categories to look at.

19

Seen Magazine

In 2019, SEEN Magazine was established as a niche magazine with an emphasis on modern photography. Finding outstanding photographers from all around the world, publishing their work, and showcasing them on their website and social media accounts is their goal.

Julien Legrand, the creator of the magazine, is a French photographer. He was born in 1979 in northern France and has a degree in graphic and web design. He was able to display his photography in the Miami Street Photography Festival in 2012. He made it to the San Francisco International Street Photography Awards finals in 2016.

The curator of this journal is Frenchman Sylvain Biard. He works as a freelance editor and filmmaker after earning his degree from the EFET School of Photography and Audiovisual in Paris in 2006. He thereafter turned his attention to corporate photography. He participates in the French collective Fragment and is passionate about personal photographic projects in his own time.

Everything is really simple when you first visit the SEEN magazine website. Two options are clearly marked: 'Photography Projects' and 'Submit'. Everything is straightforward and simple to use. The magazine's primary asset, in my opinion, is its simplicity, which makes it obvious that its purpose is to highlight photographic projects.

The site's main flaw, in my opinion, is that some of the photographic projects aren't of very good quality. In other words, some of them are easily removable.

Among the initiatives that drew my attention are:

  • Perfect Strangers by Melissa O’Shaughnessy

  • Suburban base by Gianluca Attoli

  • The Moor by Robert Darch

  • Shapeguard by Paolo Pettigiani

The 'Iran' photographic project I came across on the website was not only of poor creative quality, but it also had no documentary relevance to the Iran I currently reside in.

18

Fraction Magazine

In March 2008, David Brem and Joshua Space founded Fraction Magazine. The magazine's debut issue, which included pieces by four New Mexican artists, was published in May 2008 after the concept was conceived in New Mexico in 2007. The Fraction website had thousands of hits after a straightforward social media notification, and the issue was viewed in 11 countries in a matter of days. The magazine's readership grew even more with the publication of its second issue in July 2008. The editors-in-chief today are Leo Hsu and Bree Lamb.

Fraction's user interface is as straightforward as that of SEEN Magazine. You may go through a list of artists who have contributed and explore previous issues. You may post your own portfolio as well. In terms of aesthetic appeal and the variety of project subjects, I think Fraction's images are superior to SEEN's. Photobooks may also be viewed and submitted using Fraction. Though I've tried it on several other websites, I was unable to locate a search feature for certain nations, such as Iran.

The journal appears to be unrestricted to any certain style or area of photography and covers a broad variety of subjects. More than 700 photographers from all around the world have had their work featured by Fraction since its establishment in 2008. I believe that looking through it is absolutely worthwhile. I might be able to locate Iranian photos on Fraction now that they have a search feature!

17

EyeEm

EyeEm is a mobile app and web platform that enables photographers to interact with other photographers worldwide, share, and sell their work. The website uses artificial intelligence to classify images according to topic matter and quality, enabling photographers to make money and reach a larger audience. A group of engineers and photographers founded EyeEm in Berlin in 2011, and it soon became one of the biggest online picture markets in the world. Talenthouse purchased EyeEm in 2021, and Freepik did the same in 2023.

While EyeEm is primarily a stock photo marketplace, it's possible to find some high-quality images there. As someone who enjoys looking at photos for inspiration, I occasionally visit EyeEm. However, I sell my commercial photos on Shutterstock. The quality of photos on EyeEm is generally decent, depending on the keywords you search for. You won't find many images that are simply tagged with a keyword to boost sales.

If you're looking to improve your artistic vision in photography, websites like EyeEm might not be the best place to visit regularly. It's recommended to use EyeEm sparingly and focus on more curated platforms for inspiration.

Pexels

Millions of high-quality images and videos are available for free download on the well-known website Pexels. Both professional and amateur photographers and videographers have contributed these photos and movies, which you are free to use for business, educational, and personal purposes. Designers, bloggers, marketers, and other creative types utilize it extensively since it's one of the greatest internet sources for free photos and movies.

A group of web developers founded Pexels in 2015 with the goal of developing a straightforward and user-friendly website where users could locate and download high-quality photos. Since then, Pexels has expanded quickly to rank among the world's greatest collections of free photos.

Even while Pexels has some incredible images, others could not be regarded as high art. This is common on stock picture websites. But Pexels is more akin to an art museum than the pictures you see every day on sites like Instagram. But be careful not to spend too much time looking.

15

Unsplash

A well-liked and cost-free resource for designers and photographers seeking excellent photos is Unsplash. A huge selection of free images provided by amateur and professional photographers worldwide may be found on this website. Chris McCaw launched Unsplash in 2013, and it soon grew to become one of the world's biggest collections of free stock images.

Some of Unsplash's primary features are:

Free to use: All Unsplash images are free to use for both personal and business purposes as long as proper credit is given. Budget-conscious bloggers and small companies would particularly benefit from this.

Excellent quality: Unsplash photos are usually of extremely good quality and may be used for graphic design projects, publications, and websites.

Broad scope: Unsplash covers a lot of different topics, such as technology, gastronomy, portraiture, and natural landscapes.

Simple search: Using keywords, colors, and other filters, Unsplash's robust search engine makes it simple to locate the photos you need.

It's quite simple to browse and see photographs on Unsplash. You may view the photos and browse the collection with ease. The overall quality can undoubtedly be impacted by the absence of an editorial procedure for photo selection. But as a vast collection of pictures, it offers a fantastic chance for visual exploration.

14

ArtDoc Photo Galley

An online collection called Artdoc.gallery features modern photography that transcends conventional photography. Both seasoned and up-and-coming photographers may use it to showcase their work to a worldwide audience. Artdoc.gallery specializes on fine art and documentary photography, showcasing images that give a range of viewpoints, arouse feelings, and tell stories. This online gallery offers photography aficionados a rich and captivating experience by showcasing a diverse array of photographic works.

Regretfully, I was unable to locate any historical details on the gallery. I was very impressed by the photographs' originality when I looked through them. The photos are divided into categories including people, landscape, nature, black and white, and daily life, as well as by topic and creator. 'Photos you'd buy to display on the walls of your new house while remodeling,' is how I would sum up the pictures if I had to sum them up!

It appears that these images are inherently abstract in nature. All of them have a fascinating air of mystery. The website is not comparable to stock photography markets, despite its goal of selling artwork. It is enjoyable to look at the images in this collection. Don't pass up this chance to examine the pictures in this online gallery; it's free.

13

Edge of Humanity

The goal statement of Edge of Humanity magazine, which appears to have been created in 2014, emphasizes the growing incidence of power, greed, and corruption in our globalized society. The founder of the journal, a fifty-year-old Brazilian-American, is dedicated to portraying the human experience in all of its unadulterated and varied complexity.

The journal features a wide range of topics, including travelogues, poetry, political commentary, and photography. The photography area, which features the work of photographers from all across the world, is especially impressive despite the wide emphasis.

The magazine's wide range of information is one of its main advantages. Some might counter that this scope lessens the emphasis on photography, which is a fundamental component of many magazines of a similar nature. One of the website's advantages and disadvantages is its straightforward, blog-style user interface.

The journal highlights its dedication to total objectivity. This is an intriguing position, especially in light of Dante Alighieri's well-known statement of what happens to those who maintain their neutrality in moral dilemmas. Although the journal strives for neutrality, it is challenging to keep an entirely objective viewpoint due to the volume and diversity of the content.

12

500px

On my list, 500px is at number twelve. It is an online photo-sharing platform that enables both amateur and professional photographers to publish their work and receive feedback from other users. It has grown to be one of the most widely used photographic platforms in the world because to its appealing design and plenty of features.

Established in 2009 in Toronto, Canada, by Oleg Gotsolov and Evgeny Tchebotarev, 500px expanded swiftly to rank among the biggest online photography groups. The platform has changed a lot in the last few years and has been working to add new features in an effort to enhance the user experience. This website features excellent photo quality, and its clever algorithm assists users in selecting their best images.

You may read and watch on this website. Of course, 500px, like many other similar platforms, aims to make money from photography, but it also provides useful content for me as someone who wants to view amazing images and improve my photography skills. On the 500px website, you may read articles about how to get better at taking pictures. Every week or every two weeks, a new piece is published. You may look through the pictures by selecting the 'Discover' option. Additionally, there is a search feature for images.

The piece I wish to provide, though, is located elsewhere on the website. The 'Editor's Choice' area of 500px contains images chosen by the platform's editors and curators' team. These photographs differ greatly from other photographs in terms of both quality and creative structure.

11

Progressive Street

The 'About' page is the first thing you'll see when you go to the Progressive Street website, which is, in my opinion, the magazine's worst flaw. Their cameras, the magazine's designers think, provide a glimpse into another universe, right here in our own. The goal of the global street photography organization Progressive Street is to promote street photography as an art form. They highlight the effects of globalization and concentrate on a globalized world. They want to document sociological and anthropological viewpoints from the streets via photography, which they see as an ethnographic medium.

A 'gang' of worldwide street photographers and a tiny independent publishing firm that creates a magazine and a number of books, Progressive Street was founded in 2017 by Italian Patrizia Rossi. Every part of the magazine, which is solely devoted to photography, provides visual stories from the streets, allowing you to see the world via a camera's lens. The website's extremely simple and amateurish layout is the only reason it doesn't rank higher on my list, even if the photographs are amazing. Presenting the value you make is as crucial in today's environment as really creating it.

The vast majority of the excellent photographs in this magazine are street shots. If you would rather, you may also buy a physical copy of the magazine. I'm sure you'll initially find the Progressive Street website a little perplexing, but you'll appreciate the beautiful pictures after a little perseverance and menu exploration.

10

Aperture

The non-profit group Aperture is a global leader in photographic discourse. Through its well-known quarterly magazine, books, exhibits, digital platforms, public events, limited-edition prints, and prizes, Aperture, a New York-based organization, fosters connections between audiences throughout the world and supports artists. Founded in 1952 by a group of prominent photographers, including Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange, Aperture's mission is to support the critical role that photography plays in promoting curiosity and a more just and tolerant society, as well as to encourage 'creative thinking, significantly expressed in words and photographs'.

Aperture envisions a future where the power and democratic spirit of photography inspire a more curious, creative, and equitable world. (You can find this vision on their website.)

The 'Read' part of the Aperture website has everything you're searching for. chosen photographic projects, photobooks, articles, and other visual materials. This website features a wide variety of photos, and because the editorial staff of the journal carefully chooses which ones to use, the photos have a sophisticated appearance. The pictures may be viewed and read at the same time. Examine the world the photographer aimed to create while simultaneously viewing the world that was caught in the picture. Combining these two experiences can improve your vision. I hope it's the same way for you as it was for me.

9

Getty Images

One of the biggest and most reputable stock picture collections in the world is Getty Images. It benefits publishers, designers, photographers, and everyone else looking for varied and high-quality photos. The website offers millions of images, graphics, and movies that are searchable by a variety of subjects and aesthetics.

The origins of Getty Images may be traced to the H. Armstrong Roberts archive in 1936. It has expanded into one of the biggest collections of visual information in the world over the years through mergers and acquisitions with other significant picture archives. Getty photos makes it simple for consumers to locate the photos they want while enabling photographers to make a livelihood from their work by providing licenses for image use.

Getty Images takes a more imaginative and artistic approach to photography than other stock picture services. Still, you're dealing with a collection that values quantity above quality in the end. The major disadvantage of stock picture collections is still the lack of a critical human editor, even if artificial intelligence may enhance photographs through collaborative feedback.

8

FujiLove

A well-known website devoted solely to owners of Fujifilm X and GFX cameras is called Fujilove.com. Its goal since 2015 has been to create a thriving community of photographers by offering a wealth of tools, guides, and motivational photos.

What this website has to offer:

Monthly Magazine: One of the website's most useful sections is FujiLove Magazine. To assist photographers in honing their craft and keeping abreast of the most recent developments in Fujifilm photography, the magazine releases a selection of educational pieces, interviews with pros, and galleries of breathtaking images every month.

Podcast: For further information about Fujifilm photography, check out the Fujilove podcast. The hosts of this podcast speak with professionals in the field and professional photographers about a range of photography-related subjects.

Online Community: A thriving community of photographers that use Fujifilm. Users may communicate with other photographers, exchange photos, and pose queries.

Educational Content: To assist consumers get the most out of their cameras, the website provides a wealth of lessons and tips on Fujifilm cameras, lenses, and photographic methods.

You may go to the website's Inspiration area to see pictures and get inspiration from other people's experiences. However, a membership is required to view all of the images and material. My first problem with FujiLove was this. The fact that the notes and images are restricted to Fujifilm cameras and equipment is my second problem. Despite being one of the top names in cameras and photography gear, Fujifilm significantly restricts the range of photographic experiences. However, there are instances when we are forced to be constrained in order to draw inspiration from the work of others.

7

LensCulture

One of the most thorough and expansive resources for finding up-and-coming photographers in the globe is LensCulture. They think that for photographers of all skill levels to advance both creatively and professionally, exposure and recognition are essential.

Over three million photographers, photography fans, and photography thinkers from 160 countries have been part of their worldwide online community for more than 20 years. Through photographic contests, exhibits in prestigious locations, festival showcases, and publications, LensCulture has made it possible for people to switch careers. They want to serve as the community's go-to source for photography inspiration and guidance by offering free downloadable guidelines, an online magazine, and submission evaluations. The photographic community, in their opinion, is the vital source of inspiration and inquisitive minds behind everything LensCulture produces and supports.

On LensCulture, there are two really interesting areas. Start by choosing the 'Magazine' option and perusing the most recent articles posted on this online journal. This area contains interesting subjects with a variety of photography-related themes. You may also check out 'Explore.' An archive of LensCulture's challenges and photographic contest winners is available here. Although the website has a fairly straightforward layout, photography lovers will find its information to be quite extensive.

Street Photography

The creator of StreetPhotography.com, Johnny Mobasher, offers an intriguing account of how he came to own the domain name:

"I was able to purchase the domain'streetphotography.co.uk' in the late 1990s. Regretfully, I had overlooked the '.com' variant. I carried on with my own website using the UK version. But I've always been interested in the '.com' domain and wanted to own it.

I monitored the domain after exchanging emails with the owner on many occasions. The proprietor was a graphic designer, not a photographer, which surprised me! In reality, he had never utilized the domain for photography, much less as a platform.

I discovered that the domain protection page was vanished some seven years ago. I never received a response to my email asking the owner whether he would be ready to sell. I called, emailed, and even sent letters, but I never heard back for years. I then learned that the domain was going to expire and be placed up for auction during one of my routine inspections. My goal was to obtain it.

The auction, which was set at 2 AM my time, had 192 registered participants. At precisely two in the morning, I got ready and sat down at my computer. There was no end time for the auction. Rather, the highest bidder was required to remain in their place for five minutes. To put it another way, the auction had to conclude after five minutes without any more offers. Three contestants remained after just forty minutes. I persevered and succeeded. As I attempted to fall asleep that night, I became aware that I had gained something for everyone in the street photography community, not just for myself. A domain name search, an auction, an amateur photographer like myself, and a late-night bidding frenzy were the beginning of it all.”

Mobasher believes the website's rating hasn't been impacted by his love of storytelling. To see amazing pictures and get ideas, he suggests going to the "Inspiration" area. Although there may not be a large variety on the website, the quality is remarkable. The "Editorial" part includes a variety of essays, interviews, and photobooks, while the "Education" section provides materials to help you learn more about photography. Mobasher also likes the website because of its simple layout.

5

The New Yorker Photo

A renowned and esteemed component of the widely read magazine The New Yorker is The New Yorker Photo. This website offers visitors a rare opportunity to explore the exceptional work of professional photographers and is a veritable gold mine of documentary, news, art, and portrait photography. It serves as a source of inspiration for photographers and photography fans in addition to being an online gallery.

The New Yorker Photo's history is as old as the publication itself. The New Yorker has long appreciated photography because it understands the narrative potential of pictures. The magazine's photography section developed into a stand-alone platform as technology progressed, emphasizing the presentation of photo-driven stories in a straightforward and minimalistic manner.

Here's a glimpse of what you can expect to find on The New Yorker Photo:

Images of Climate Change That Cannot Be Missed

The evolution of photography to document climate change is examined in the article. Photographers like James Balog and Gideon Mendel, who have captured the obvious evidence of a warming globe, are featured in it. Gideon Mendel's photographs, which depict families returning to their flooded houses, particularly highlight the human cost of climate change. His art emphasizes the psychological and physical costs of these incidents.

A Girl’s Coming of Age in the Countryside of Her Childhood

This article discusses Juanita Escobar and Saray's novel "Solo Apto Para Mí Misma," which roughly translates to "Only Suitable for Myself." Photographer Juanita Escobar and anthropologist Francisca Rís began a project to chronicle indigenous women in Colombia's eastern plains. During the COVID-19 epidemic, Francisca's daughter Saray started writing and shooting pictures while she was in quarantine on the plains. Saray's teenage experiences and her relationship with nature are depicted in the book through her essays and Escobar's photography. Love, loneliness, and reestablishing a connection with nature are among the topics covered in the book.

A Photographer’s Frank, Tender Portrait of Her Parents’ Final Year

The 'Til Death Do Us Part' series of Becky Wilkes' images is included in this project. The last year of her parents' lives during the COVID-19 epidemic is depicted in this series. The images show Wilkes's parents' love and affection as well as her own concern for them. Her parents' routine activities, including solving crossword puzzles and conversing with their grandkids, are depicted in the pictures. The last moments of Wilkes's parents' lives and their memorial ceremony are shown in the picture series.

The New Yorker Photo offers a variety of photographic experiences, such as these. Even more photographic projects are available on the website of this established and well-known newspaper if you become a member and subscribe.

It's rather expensive, but I wasn't looking to purchase art. I wanted to draw inspiration from other people's professional endeavors.

For art lovers, Saatchi Art is essentially a gold mine. Finding new artists and genres is made simple by its extensive selection of varied artwork. The site is easy to use, and the excellent photos give you the impression that you are looking through a real gallery. 1

Street Photography Magazine

The famous black-and-white photos in publications like Life and Look motivated Bob Patterson, the creator and publisher of Street Photography Magazine, to pursue photography at an early age. In 2013, following a prosperous career as an executive in the cable television sector, he founded Street Photography Magazine. He had the idea to "build a digital platform where documentary and street photographers could share their perspectives with a global audience and showcase their work."

He often takes part in festivals, events, and contests across the world as a well-respected member of the street photography community. He has judged a number of prominent competitions, including as the URBAN Photography Awards, the Siena International Photo Awards, and the LACP Street Week Photo Contest. Patterson has also appeared as a guest on Ibarionex Perello's 'The Candid Frame' podcast and as a featured speaker at the Miami Street Photography Festival.

Bob's primary goal as a photographer is to capture ordinary life and the narratives of people in his neighborhood and other places he visits. His dedication to martial arts, love of travel, and insatiable curiosity about the world around him all compliment his love of photography.

A variety of essays and photographic projects are included on this website. For what reason does this online magazine rank first on my list? I can see the cause clearly. The selection and curation of the photographs perfectly suits my personal preferences. It was about eight in the morning when I began browsing this page, and it was already about eleven when I eventually got up from my desk to pour myself a cup of coffee, my neck hurting. That was sufficient for me to rank Street photos Magazine as the website I wanted to suggest to my readers in order to see excellent photos.
